A Field study to Estimate the Prevalence of Bovine African Trypanosomosis in Butaleja District, Uganda OAK
JING, Zhang; MAGONA, Joseph W; SAKURAI, Tatsuya; THEKISOE, Oriel M. M; OTIM, Charles P; SUGIMOTO, Chihiro; INOUE, Noboru; 井上, 昇.
Prevalence of bovine trypanosomosis was determined from a total of 203 blood samples collected from Butaleja district, eastern Uganda. All samples were examined by microhematocrit centrifuge test (MHC), PCR and ELISA. ELISA was performed in accordance with the OIE standard procedures using Trypanosoma brucei gambiense procyclic form crude antigens. PCR were utilized to identify the species and the subspecies of trypanosome. The overall prevalence of bovine African trypanosomosis was 8.9% by MHC, and 45.3% by the ELISA. Since substantial number (12 out of 18) of MHC positive samples were negative in the PCR tests, we could not conclude the most epidemic trypanosome species in the studied area. Nevertheless, the PCR results suggests that the most prevalent...

A new Morphological Classification of the Anterior Inferior Iliac Spine: Relevance in Subspine Hip Impingement International Journal of Morphology
Morales-Avalos,Rodolfo; Leyva-Villegas,Jorge I; Sánchez-Mejorada,Gabriela; Méndez-Aguirre,Omar; Galindo-Aguilar,Oscar Ulises; Quiroga-Garza,Alejandro; Villarreal-Silva,Eliud E; Vílchez-Cavazos,Félix; Galván,José R.B; Elizondo-Omaña,Rodrigo E; Guzmán-López,Santos.
Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAI) is a clinical entity that has been recognized in recent years as a frequent cause of pain and the early development of hip arthrosis. Subspine hip impingement is characterized by the prominent or abnormal morphology of the anteroinferior iliac spine (AIIS), which contributes to the development of a clinical picture that is similar to FAI. The aims of this study were to propose a new morphological classification of the AIIS, to determine the prevalence of the different AIIS morphologies based on this classification and to correlate the presence of said morphologies with different gender and age groups. The sample consisted of 458 hemipelvises from individuals of known age and sex (264 men and 194 women). Each...

NikoliĆ, Aleksandra; DimitrijeviĆ, Sanda; BobiĆ, Branko.
Giardia lamblia is a commonly identified intestinal pathogen protozoan in humans in Serbia, since 8.0% of the children are infected in Belgrade area. In light of the zoonotic potential of Giardia infection, a total of 167 dogs were examined for giardiasis in the same urban area. Six of 81 dogs (7.4%) from urban homes, 14 of 75 dogs (18.6%) from the pound, and four of 11 dogs (36.4%) from the farm were excreting Giardia cysts. Thus, the overall prevalence of infection in dogs in the Belgrade area was 14.4%. Of six household pets excreting Giardia, five owners and all 16 of their family members were Giardia-negative, while in case of one dog both the owner and the only other family member were Giardia- positive. The data demonstrate that a potential animal...

Cymothoa frontalis, a cymothoid isopod parasitizing the belonid fish Strongylura strongylura from the Malabar Coast (Kerala, India): redescription, description, prevalence and life cycle ArchiMer
Thamban, Aneesh Panakkool; Kappalli, Sudha; Kottarathil, Helna Ameri; Gopinathan, Anilkumar; Paul, Trilles Jean.
Background: Cymothoa frontalis Milne Edward, 1840 is a very poorly described cymothoid, notwithstanding the previous redescription of the female. Pertinently, to date, the host of C. frontalis has not been identified with adequate precision. Most of the descriptions of cymothoids carried out hitherto were based primarily on females, but practically ignoring other life cycle stages. The present paper redescribes the female and describes other life cycle stages of the species C. frontalis to get better precision in their identification. Results: The female phase of C. frontalis is redescribed according to type specimens extant in the NMNH, Paris, and also by the data obtained from live specimens collected during the present study. The general morphology and...

Detecting outliers in species distribution data: Some caveats and clarifications on a virtual species study ArchiMer
Meynard, Christine N.; Kaplan, David; Leroy, Boris.
Liu et al. (2018) used a virtual species approach to test the effects of outliers on species distribution models. In their simulations, they applied a threshold value over the simulated suitabilities to generate the species distributions, suggesting that using a probabilistic simulation approach would have been more complex and yield the same results. Here, we argue that using a probabilistic approach is not necessarily more complex and may significantly change results. Although the threshold approach may be justified under limited circumstances, the probabilistic approach has multiple advantages. First, it is in line with ecological theory, which largely assumes non‐threshold responses. Second, it is more general, as it includes the threshold as a...

Detection of multi drug resistant bacteria in major hospitals in Kano, North-West, Nigeria BJM
Yusuf,I.; Arzai,A.H.; Haruna,M.; Sharif,A.A.; Getso,M.I..
Two major hospitals in Kano, North West Nigeria have recorded increasing resistance of clinical pathogens to broad spectrum β lactams, mediated by extended spectrum β- lactamase (ESβL) and non ESBLs. A study was therefore undertaken to determine the occurrence and prevalence of plasmid and chromosomal mediated AmpC βL and carbapenemase in addition to already known ESBL due to increasing resistance of pathogens from the two hospitals to carbapenems, cephamycins and flouroquinolones. Antibiogram tests and ESBL, AmpC and carbapenemase production tests were performed on all the isolates. AmpC and carbapenemase producers were further screened for AmpC inducibility and metallo beta lactamase production respectively. Majority of the isolates (> 80%) were...

Detection of renal dysfunction based on serum creatinine levels in a Brazilian community: the Bambuí Health and Ageing Study BJMBR
Passos,V.M.A.; Barreto,S.M.; Lima-Costa,M.F.F..
There are few population-based studies of renal dysfunction and none conducted in developing countries. In the present study the prevalence and predictors of elevated serum creatinine levels (SCr > or = 1.3 mg/dl for men and 1.1 mg/dl for women) were determined among Brazilian adults (18-59 years) and older adults (>60 years). Participants included all older adults (N = 1742) and a probabilistic sample of adults (N = 818) from Bambuí town, MG, Southeast Brazil. Predictors were investigated using multiple logistic regression. Mean SCr levels were 0.77 ± 0.15 mg/dl for adults, 1.02 ± 0.39 mg/dl for older men, and 0.81 ± 0.17 mg/dl for older women. Because there were only 4 cases (0.48%) with elevated SCr levels among adults, the analysis of elevated...
